EU ready to impose further Venezuela sanctions after 2020 elections – EU Sanctions

The EU has issued a Declaration stating that it is prepared to impose additional targeted sanctions in response to the decision of the Venezuelan National Assembly to assume its mandate on 5 January 2021 on the basis of non-democratic elections. The EU will be “particularly vigilant with regard to any acts of repression, particularly against members of the opposition”.

The Declaration says that the December 2020 election failed to comply with international standards, and that it cannot be recognised as “credible, inclusive or transparent”.  The EU calls upon the Venezuelan authorities to start a Venezuela-led transition process to put an end to the political crisis.
